BIAFRA: Amnesty International releases damning report

Amnesty International an NGO concerned with human rights violations today released a damning report about the violations carried out against pro-Biafrans.

It would be recalled that yesterday, TMnews published that the NGO’s report would be published today.

According to information gathered from International Business Times (IBT) UK, it accuses the military of rough handling and killing protesters as they marched in support of the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

A team of officials from the NGO are currently on the ground to gather more information and has accused the military of heavy cover-ups.

The military currently denies the killings that occurred in the south eastern Nigeria and explained that they were intervening in what would have become a deadly event as some protesters were seen with arms.

Amnesty International also went on to condemn the jailing of the Biafra leader without bail and for such a long time. Emphasis was made to the series of unlawful detentions or prolonged detentions made by the DSS.

New life beckons for Bangladesh's 'Tree Man' as surgery begins

Dhaka, Bangladesh (CNN)Not even in his wildest dreams did Abul Bajandra think he would live to see this day. Lying on a hospital bed at Dhaka Medical College, Bangladesh's so-called "Tree Man" is just hours away from the first round of surgery that will hopefully change his life for the better.

He is suffering from an extremely rare genetic condition known as Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis,or "Tree Man" disease, which causes extreme wart-like lesions across the body.

"I don't think I can sleep tonight. For a poor fellow like me from a remote part of the country, this is too good to be true," he tells CNN from his bed.

For any first time visitor, it's hard to appreciate Bajandra's reality. He has tree-like branches growing out from all over his fingers, palms and feet, the sight of which would make most people squeamish.

Civil servant who did no work for six years found out by officials preparing to reward him for 'long service'

A Spanish civil servant who did no work for six years has been fined almost €27,000 (£21,000) after his long absence was finally noticed.

Officials in Cádiz were preparing to hand Joaquín García an award for long service when inquiries revealed the true extent of his contribution to the local authority.

In 1990, he was given a €37,000-a-year post at the Aguas de Cádiz public utilities provider, Spain’s El Mundo newspaper reported.

Jorge Blas Fernandez, who served as the city’s deputy mayor from 1995 to 2015, said he was given an office in the municipal building and no more was heard for more than a decade.

“We thought the water company was supervising him but that was not the case,” he added.

“We found out when we were about to present him with a commemorative plaque for 20 years of service.”

Inquiries with the manager of Aguas de Cádiz, who had an office opposite, revealed he had not seen Mr García for several years and when Mr Blas phoned his absent employee, he allegedly “could not answer” questions on what he had been doing.

A legal case was launched in 2010 alleging he had not done a day’s work since 2004, despite continuing to collect his €37,000 (£29,000) annual salary.

After a protracted lawsuit, Mr García, lost his appeal at a Cádiz court on Thursday and will have to pay his fine, which is the largest possible, The Times reported.

Mr García denied the allegations, claiming that he turned up each day but found there was no work to do.

Asked why he did not report the situation, he said he had a family to support and feared it would be difficult to find another job, so read extensively and became an “expert on the philosopher Spinoza”.

The 69-year-old was not fired from the post because he had already retired.

US State execute oldest inmate on death-row prisoner before his 73rd birthday

US state, Georgia executed its oldest death-row prisoner early this morning at 12: 46 am, just days before his 73rd birthday for murdering a clerk of a convenience store.
The septuagenarian, Brandon Jones, was given a lethal dose of injection at a state prison in Jackson, where he has already spent more than 36 years behind bars for the 1979 murder.Analysts say Jones’ case is an example of the “double punishment” faced by many death row prisoners who are made to spend decades in solitary confinement in anticipation of death.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer last year lashed out against “unconscionably long delays that undermine the death penalty’s penological purpose.”

Jones and his co-defendant Van Solomon, both African Americans were sentenced to death for killing a white gas station store clerk during a robbery.

A police officer told the court that he saw Jones close the door to a room in the back of the convenience store and, not long after, heard four gunshots. The officer said he went into the room and found Jones and another man, Van Roosevelt Solomon. A short time later, authorities found the clerk’s body; he had been shot five times, and two revolvers were found.

Solomon died on the electric chair in 1985 whilst Jones denied shooting the clerk and prosecutors have never been able to determine who fired the shot.

Death penalty critics have argued that many death row inmates were never treated fairly because they were sentenced to death at a time when they lacked a satisfactory defense system and that if they were tried today, the outcome would be different.

Already four persons have been executed in the United States this year.

“Jones’s case raises questions of proportionality and discriminatory application of the death penalty,” the Death Penalty Information Center said in a statement.

Jones, who would have turned 73 on Valentine’s Day, refused the opportunity to request a final meal ahead of his 7:00 pm (0100 GMT) execution on Wednesday.

Attorneys for Jones had petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday to step in, filing two stay requests but the justices rejected both petition without any recorded dissents.

Jones was executed early Wednesday (February, 3 2016) morning at 12:46 a.m. according to state corrections officials. He took a final prayer and recorded a statement, they said.

Incredible New Airplane Without Windows, Just Screens! Are You Ready For A Ride?

The Center for Process Innovation, a British technology research company, thinks they've got the next big step in aviation transportation figured out. Their idea is this: they want to remove the windows from passenger planes and replace them with OLED touch-screens that extend along the plane’s entire length and display the view from outside through cameras mounted on the plane’s exterior. Sounds scary? Only if you are afraid of heights and flying.

7 Ways To Sleep Well And Wake Up Happy

For most of us, waking up is hard to do. The internet is full of articles encouraging us to embrace our inner early bird, imitate successful tycoons who are rising at the crack of dawn, and increase our productivity by getting in a full day’s work before our actual day has even begun! You probably already know the classics: putting your alarm clock far away from your bed; getting a full night’s sleep, but here are some lesser known ideas that just might make your start of the day so much happier!

1. LAUGHTER

Laughter isn’t just the best medicine; it’s the best wake up call as well. When I was paying my way through university, I once had a total of 12 part-time jobs along with a full degree course-load. One of my regular jobs had me home at 1 a.m. every morning, whilst my next shift needed me up by 6. Needless to say I was in desperate need of some way to jerk my brain into action.

The trick I found was to switch on my computer and stream some YouTube videos of my favourite stand up comedy. As I was getting ready, the jokes I was hearing would invariably provoke a chortle, then a chuckle, then an all out peal of laughter and before I knew it, endorphins were racing through my system and I was good to go! If you can’t muster the strength to laugh, try thinking of something that makes you smile.
2. LIGHT & FRESH AIR

If you live near the equator then natural sunlight is your best friend. Those of us further north or south can utilise the early morning sun during the summer months, but have to make do with artificial light in the winter. Whatever its source, exposing yourself to light as soon as you get out of bed will trigger your body’s natural tendency to associate daylight with being awake and alert.

If you’re feeling really groggy, there’s nothing like a breath of fresh air to clear your head and your lungs. If you can, go for a walk, but make sure you’re not too covered up. Colder, slightly bracing temperatures are better for keeping you awake as they force your heart to work harder to keep the rest of your body warm. If you can’t go out, then opening a window or door to let in some fresh air should do the trick.
3. REWARD YOURSELF

One of the best ways to do something you just don’t feel like doing is creating an immediate, gratifying incentive for doing it. If you’re dreading the sound of that alarm clock every morning, plan something exciting as a reward for obeying its wretched call and actually getting out of bed. Food is one of my favourite rewards, and I usually set up the breakfast table with my favourite china (I’m old school like that), and plan a scrumptious breakfast of pancakes, oatmeal or a classic English fry-up. Other ideas could be a work-out, if you’re an exercise nut, or a nice soak in a luxurious bubble bath… whatever works for you.
4. STREAMLINE YOUR MORNING ROUTINE

I would imagine this goes without saying but plan ahead as much as you can. You don’t want to associate waking up with stress and last minute panic. Streamline your morning routine as much as you can. Get as much done the night before as possible: your outfit, your bag, your lunch, any items you need with you for the day, kids’ clothes and belongings if you have them. You may find that as your morning routine becomes more of a breeze you might actually begin to look forward to getting up and starting your day.
5. GET TALKING

Talk to someone. Anyone. One of the easiest ways of jump starting the little grey cells is by engaging in conversation, ideally with a responsive participant, although even a pet or a plant will do if you’ve got enough to say! Talking gets you listening, interpreting and responding, all activities which naturally and gently get your brain into gear for the upcoming day.
6. GO TO SLEEP WITH A FULL BLADDER

One surefire way to get yourself out of bed when you feel the quilt has taken you hostage is to let nature play its hand. You should be drinking 8-10 glasses of water a day anyway, but try drinking at least a large glass just before falling asleep. If you’re in good health, you might just find nature’s own call to be the natural alarm clock you’ve been needing.
7. MAKE YOUR BED

I’m a fan of gorgeous bed linen. I love the look of a cosy bed covered in throw cushions and a fabulous eiderdown. I feel seriously guilty getting into my bed once I’ve gone through the effort of making it, as I usually make it hotel-style (sheets taut enough to bounce pennies), so I usually avoid napping during the day for fear of messing up my good work! If you can, on any level, relate to that, then try making your bed as soon as you get up. That way, if you’re even a little like me, you might find it easier to resist climbing back in, and you might even get a nice little congratulatory feeling of having gotten something done so early in the morning!
