Incredible: The body of this 200 year old mummy is still alive!
It’s hard to believe this, and trying to imagine it is much harder. This 200 year old mummy of a Tibetian monk is still “alive”.
Scientists in Ulan-Bator got their hands on a mummy of a 200 year old Tibetan monk that was found in the province of Songinohairan.

The mummy is in a sitting position known as the “lotus pose”, the palm of his left hand is open, the right is closed is turned down, symbolizing the preachers in Sutra. According to ancient Buddha lamas this man’s condition could still be considered alive. He is in deep meditation and the longer he is in this state the closer he is to Buddha.

During a detailed investigation, scientists came to the conclusion that the protein functions of the mummy’s body are in a life-like condition. This trance-like condition is called “Tukdam” by monks and the monk Dashi-Dorzho Itigalov, by his own will sat down read a prayer and died in this pose.

Incredible: The body of this 200 year old mummy is still alive!
Before sitting and dying Itigalov prepared himself morally and physically for 10 years, and in his will told his students that he was to be buried in the sitting position. Then in 30 years his students were to come and open his crypt to look at him and only return his body in 75 years.
That was exactly what his students did. They put his body in a cedar coffin, which was later filled with salt and later buried. In 30 years when they opened his coffin the monk was still sitting as if yet alive. They changed his robes, read prayers and buried him again. The next time his body was unearthed was only in 2002.
His body displays no signs of macroscopic decay (soft muscles, working joints and intact skin) thus leading many to believe that he resides in a trance nirvana-like state.
He has been recognized as one of the holy Buddhist objects of Russia.
Many say that the Lama does not come back to life because all the people he promised he would come back to are all dead.
